In the heart of Kyoto, a unique architectural intervention is transforming the way we perceive and utilize living spaces. Tato Architects, led by Yo Shimada, has reimagined a vacant apartment within a municipal housing complex, offering a fresh perspective on urban living. The key element? A giant, blue-green semicircular table that becomes the focal point and organizer of the entire space.
A Table as a Spatial Revolution
This innovative project, part of a larger renovation initiative involving Kyoto's universities, aims to breathe new life into aging housing estates. Each participating architecture program takes on a unit, and in this case, Tato Architects has created a captivating and functional living space centered around a single, oversized table.
The original apartment, designed for a nuclear family, was fragmented and confined. By removing non-structural partitions, the space was opened up, creating a canvas for a new, more flexible layout. The table, with its impressive 3.6-meter diameter, becomes the hero of this transformation.
Plywood Volumes and a Colorful Statement
The design team, comprising graduate students, proposed a bold approach. They consolidated domestic functions into compact plywood volumes, creating a contrast with the expansive blue-green table. This table, extending beyond conventional furniture dimensions, becomes a shared surface for various activities - meals, work, and relaxation. It's a bold statement, visually and functionally.
The functional rooms, occupying only a third of the unit, are housed in the plywood volume. The bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom are reduced to essentials, organized around existing walls.
