Peanut Butter Power: A World-First Discovery for Older Adults

A groundbreaking study from Deakin University has revealed a simple and delicious way to boost muscle power in older adults, potentially reducing the risk of falls. The research, funded by the Peanut Institute in the United States, highlights the benefits of a daily peanut butter habit.

In the Older Individuals after Nut Supplementation (COINS) study, participants aged 66 to 89 years old were randomly assigned to either a peanut butter group or a control group. Those in the peanut butter group consumed a heaped tablespoon of natural peanut butter daily for six months. The results were remarkable: older adults in this group showed significant gains in muscle power and protein without any weight gain.

The study's lead researcher, Associate Professor Sze-Yen Tan, emphasizes the practical benefits of this discovery. "Exercise and resistance training are common strategies to maintain muscle power in older adults," she said. "However, our study demonstrates that incorporating peanut butter into their diet can be a cost-effective and palatable solution, especially for those who struggle with the taste or cost of oral nutritional supplements."

The peanut butter group outperformed the control group in the five-time sit-to-stand test, a key indicator of muscle power. This improved performance translates to better daily activities like climbing stairs and standing up from a chair, reducing the risk of falls and maintaining independence.

Peanut butter's nutritional profile is a key factor in its success. Rich in protein, healthy fats, and antioxidants, it helps reduce inflammation and muscle breakdown. Its smooth texture also makes it more accessible to individuals with dental issues who find whole nuts challenging to eat.

Looking ahead, researchers are excited to explore the potential of combining nut consumption with resistance training. "We aim to further investigate the synergistic effects of nuts and resistance training on physical function in older adults," Associate Professor Tan said. This research could pave the way for a comprehensive approach to enhancing muscle power and overall health in the elderly population.
