The Portland Fire may not have taken the court just yet, but they are already making significant waves in the WNBA landscape. On Thursday, RAJ Sports, the organization behind the Fire, announced an exciting partnership with Kaiser Permanente aimed at enhancing the medical care available to professional female athletes.
This collaboration is designed to shine a spotlight on crucial aspects of player wellness, injury prevention strategies, and the long-term health of athletes associated with both the Fire and the Portland Thorns, another team under the RAJ Sports umbrella. Kaiser Permanente has committed to providing what they describe as "world-class medical care" for the basketball and soccer players alike, which has emerged as a prominent topic of discussion in women's sports over recent years.
Lisa Bhathal Merage, who serves as the Governor of both the Portland Thorns and the Portland Fire and is also the Managing Partner of RAJ Sports, stated, "Our goal is to have the best care in women’s sports." She emphasized that this partnership with Kaiser Permanente will bring essential expertise that can help elevate athlete performance, prevent injuries, and support the longevity of their careers.
"With both teams training at our new performance center, we are establishing a pioneering model for the future of women’s sports and setting a global standard for how female athletes are supported," she added.
As part of this innovative arrangement, the Fire and Thorns will utilize the upcoming dual-sport Kaiser Permanente Performance Center, set to be the primary training facility for both teams when it opens its doors in 2026. This state-of-the-art center will offer comprehensive services including advanced sports medicine, rehabilitation, mental health support, and injury recovery—all conveniently located under one roof, with doctors serving as the primary care providers for both teams.
Wendy Watson, President of Kaiser Permanente Northwest, expressed pride in being chosen as the healthcare provider for the Thorns and Fire. "We are honored that the Thorns and Fire have selected Kaiser Permanente as their medical provider and team physicians. Such a decision reflects the confidence placed in our clinicians and our integrated care model. We are excited to provide support for these remarkable women athletes at the groundbreaking Kaiser Permanente Performance Center," she said.
In addition to this announcement, RAJ Sports revealed plans to appoint a Chief Medical Officer from Kaiser Permanente who will be responsible for overseeing medical operations for both teams. With this robust health and performance initiative underway, the Fire are poised to make a strong entrance into the WNBA when their inaugural season kicks off on May 9.
