Are you tired of the same old hibachi experience? Toro Japanese Steakhouse in Vero Beach is here to change your mind about what a Japanese steakhouse can be.
Nestled in the former home of Takara Japanese Restaurant, Toro might look familiar at first glance, but don’t let the unchanged décor fool you—this is a dining experience that’s been completely reimagined. Under the passionate leadership of Novia Rudiarta, Toro has elevated both its service and culinary offerings, setting a new standard for Japanese fusion in the area.
But here’s where it gets interesting: This isn’t your typical chain restaurant. Toro is a labor of love, family-owned by Indonesian-born Komang Suati, Pande (Didi) and Novia Rudiarta, Sherwin and Mirah Wiguna, and Yenick (Ochen) Sunariat. Their deep-rooted expertise and genuine affection for Japanese cuisine shine through in every dish, creating an experience that feels both authentic and innovative.
During our visit, the hibachi grill room buzzed with energy, but our party of four was thoughtfully seated in a quieter section of the restaurant. The staff’s warmth and attentiveness set the tone for the evening, making us feel like honored guests rather than just another table. And this is the part most people miss: It’s the little details—like the perfectly timed service and the genuine smiles—that truly set Toro apart.
We kicked things off with a sweet potato sushi roll ($6.59), a simple yet delightful combination of crispy tempura and a light drizzle of sauce. It vanished almost as soon as it arrived. Next, we savored miso soup and a fresh salad topped with classic ginger dressing—a refreshing prelude to the main event.
Toro’s menu is a treasure trove of options, from teriyaki and hibachi to bento boxes. We opted for a mix: two vegetarian dishes, a steak entrée, and a chicken specialty. Each dish was a masterpiece in its own right. The vegetable tempura ($18.99) was a standout, featuring a generous assortment of fresh vegetables—mushrooms, zucchini, sweet potato, broccoli, onions, and asparagus—lightly battered and fried to perfection. Paired with a hearty portion of fried rice, it was a vegetarian’s dream.
The tofu yaki udon ($15.99) was equally impressive, with crisply stir-fried tofu and sautéed onions tossed with thick, chewy udon noodles. Seasoned just right, it was deeply comforting and satisfying. But here’s where it gets controversial: While some might argue that tofu can’t hold a candle to meat, this dish proves that plant-based options can be just as flavorful and fulfilling.
For the meat lovers, the eight-ounce New York strip steak ($25.99) was a showstopper. Lean, thinly sliced, and cooked to perfection, it was served with a rich teriyaki sauce and a medley of sautéed vegetables—onions, zucchini, carrots, and broccoli—alongside fried rice. It’s a classic for a reason.
Our final selection, a bento box ($24.59), showcased Toro’s versatility. It included tender chicken katsu, tempura vegetables, a California roll, and fried rice—each component expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. And this is the part most people miss: The bento box isn’t just a meal; it’s a journey through Toro’s culinary range, all in one dish.
Throughout the evening, the staff’s professionalism and genuine hospitality made us feel like valued guests. Toro Japanese Steakhouse may look familiar on the outside, but inside, it’s a refreshingly new experience that’s well worth the trip.
Now, here’s a thought-provoking question for you: In a world dominated by chain restaurants, does a family-run establishment like Toro stand a chance? Or is it the personal touch and passion that will keep diners coming back? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
