The US Department of Health and Human Services, alongside the US Department of Agriculture, recently unveiled its updated dietary guidelines (check them out here: https://realfood.gov/#resources). Forget what you knew about the old food pyramid; this one's been flipped on its head! Protein, dairy, and healthy fats now reign supreme, while the emphasis on whole grains has taken a backseat.
According to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., this is a declaration of war… on sugar, that is. The new guidelines also boldly proclaim that “we are ending the war on protein.” The initial goal – cutting back on processed foods and sugar – sounds promising, right?
But here's where it gets controversial...
While the guidelines highlight plant-based protein sources and healthy fats from whole foods within the “protein, dairy, and healthy fats” category, they've significantly bumped up the recommended daily protein intake. We're talking about an increase from 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight to a whopping 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram! To top it off, the guide suggests including a protein-rich food at every single meal.
